COAL CREEK, KORUMBURRA - History
Coal was discovered at Coal Creek in 1872, but little mining took place until the early 1890s. Coal Creek was set aside as a coal reserve in 1879, and an exploratory tunnel begun in 1888 intersected 3 coal seams. Commercial production untilising a new Victorian Railways branch line commenced in 1892. The operation was expanded with the creation of a new company in 1894, but lost VR contracts saw the mine struggle for many years. In 1922 the operation was reformed as sunbeam collieries, which operated until 1958/59.
