Statement of Significance
REVISED STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE, CONTEXT 2010
What is significant?
The c1967 house, the west side addition and the surrounding site to the title boundary (See also H08, H09, H10, HO40 and HO148).
How is it significant?
The house is architecturally and historically significant to the Shire of Nillumbik and potentially to the State of Victoria.
Why is it significant?
The house is architecturally significant because it was designed by Morrie Shaw (a modernist architect who worked in the office of Kevin Borland, also a noted modernist architect) and because it is one of the most creative and unusual dwellings built in Victoria and Australia during the 1960s. The house is particularly unusual in that it combines the modernist style with which Borland's office is associated with the use of mud brick and recycled materials that are characteristic of the 'Eltham-style' of architecture (Criteria D, E & F). The house is historically significant because it was the long-term home of the well known potter, Leon Saper, and was an integral part of the Dunmoochin artists' community precinct (Criteria A, G & H).
