What is significant?
The Moreland Park Buildings (Australia House) at 148-164 Sydney Road, Coburg.

How is it significant?
The Moreland Park Buildings (Australia House) at 148-164 Sydney Road, Coburg are of local historic and aesthetic significance to the City of Moreland.

Why is it significant?
Of historic significance for their associations with Montague Dare and the development of the Moreland Park estate, one of the most prestigious to be developed in Coburg during the land boom of the late 1880s. They demonstrate the optimism for future development that characterized the speculative development at that time. They also have associations with the centenary of European settlement of Australia, which is reflected in both the name and design of the building. (AHC Criteria A.4 & H.1)

Of aesthetic significance as a representative example of a Victorian Italianate shop row, which contributes to the historic character of Sydney Road. (AHC Criterion E.1)

      MORELAND PARK BUILDINGS (AUSTRALIA HOUSE) - Physical Description 1

      The Moreland Park Buildings (Australia House) at 148-164 Sydney Road, Coburg are nine two storey shop fronts which are altered at street level, including the removal of the original verandah, but are reasonably intact to the upper storey. The shops are late Victorian (1888) and are distinguished by the rhythm of the bays:

      - 148 and 156 have an elaborate decorative parapet and three highly decorated round arched double hung sash windows each
      -150, 154, 158 and 162 have a simple parapet with a single segmented arch double hung sash window each
      -152 and 160 has a simple parapet with a single segmented arch double hung sash window
      -164 has a simple parapet with a pair of round arched double hung sash windows.

      The building turns the corner at 164 Sydney Road. The building is rendered and painted, most of the shops are different colours. Urns along the parapet mark the division between shops.
