Statement of Significance
The townhouse, Little Parndon was erected in 1862 by Ravenscroft and Oldfield for Eugen von Guerard, the Austrian painter who emigrated to Australia and, as an artist and teacher, is important in the development of Australian landscape painting. He was also curator of the National Gallery. The two storey structure of handmade bricks was the home of Lord Casey, a noted politician and Governor-General, and is presently occupied by Lady Casey.
This is an early and fine example of townhouse architecture and is important for its associations with Eugen Von Guerard and Lord and Lady Casey. The facade is simply composed with typical three bay arrangement. Its distinctive feature is the simple exposed brickwork with fine brick cornice. The house is an essential part of the East Melbourne area and a fine example of inner suburban Melbourne.
The white picket fence is compatible with the house.
