Statement of Significance
The terrace house at 197 Drummond Street is one of a pair of terrace houses erected in 1872-74 for Charles Morris. The three storey brick structure has a rendered facade and two storey cast iron verandah and gallery. Its pair, no 199, has been extensively renovated and the verandah and decorative mouldings (with the exception of the cornice) has been removed.
The terrace is designed in the conservative classical style and had a typical composition. The finely decorated verandah has unusual cast iron balustrade panels. It is an essential element of the Drummond Street precinct and a fine example of a building type which is a distinctive feature of inner suburban Melbourne. It appears that cast iron freize to the first floor gallery has been removed. The cast iron palisade fence is compatible with the house.
