Statement of Significance

Designed by Blackett and Rankin Architects in 1900, the simple form, segmented bow window and low pitched roof hint at the California Bungalow style that became an interest of W A M Blackett. The Lofts was designed for Dr Sidney Plowman who came to Australia in 1890 to be director of the Melbourne Pharmacy School. Although he resigned in 1895, he remained a prominent doctor and pharmicist until 1919.
