Statement of Significance
A two-manual instrument of 24 speaking stops built in Bradford, England by Frederick W Nicholson, installed in the Independent Church, Prahran in 1863 and in its present location in 1999. The instrument incorporates the largest corpus of pipework from the early years of Victoria and is notable for its flue choruses, of Germanic inspiration, and its elaborate Gothic case, incorporating gilt finials and stencilled faade pipes. Although reconfigured for its new location, with a new duplicate case, action and console, the instrument retains most of its original pipework, windchests and wind system, and its brilliant sound is distinctive and unusual for the period.
