WINDSOR COTTAGE, PORTLAND - History
Built in the 1862 for Captain James Fawthrop, Portland's first harbourmaster (1853 - 1868)WINDSOR COTTAGE, PORTLAND - Interpretation of Site
4 roomed bluestone cottage, outbuildings and a store. Weed domed (bee-hive shaped) cistern & slate roof stables.
Local historian (Gordon Stokes) - Lower wall foundations still present, which depicts the footprint of the house, outbuildings, walls & remains of stables at the reaer. Well on the west side is intact, evidence of disturbance by students from nearby school (Iron gate covering removed, fence damaged).
WINDSOR COTTAGE, PORTLAND - Archaeological Significance
This site is archaeologically significant as it has a high potential to contain insitu deposits relating to construction & occupation of the residence.

Of local significance as an example of an early settlement in the Portland township.
Heritage Inventory Description
WINDSOR COTTAGE, PORTLAND - Heritage Inventory Description
Foundations and lower walls of 1850s four-roomed bluestone cottage and two outbuildings behind. Stone-lined beehive shaped cistern. Artefacts including ceramic, glass, metal, brick, bone etc were found. Site inspected Jan 1994. The site overgrown by creeper and the features are difficult to discern.
Heritage Inventory Significance: Local historical significance - built by town's first harbour master (Captain Fawthrop). Archaeological potential.
