PIONEER (OLD) CEMETERY, HENTY HWY, PORTLAND - History
Although the North Cemetery closed in 1882, there were a further 224 burials between that time and 1959. The early headstones (45 of them) and memorials dating back to 1835 were moved to the Nth cemetery. The cemetery extended into the adjoing area and many of the graves had been in what is now know as Percy St. There are approx. 45 headstones in the Nth Cemetery and many are related to Portland's earliest history.PIONEER (OLD) CEMETERY, HENTY HWY, PORTLAND - Interpretation of Site
Early cemetery dating to mid 19th century. Closed in 1882, 224 more burials occurred until 1959.

Cemetery used 1848-1959. Site inspected Jan 1994 - several headstones have been restored.
Heritage Inventory Significance: Regarded as an important survival of the early occupation and contains the graves of many of Portland's former citizens.
