Statement of Significance
The Sky High Restaurant (completed 1971) and associated landscaping (completed 1967), all designed by J Dale Fisher, is architecturally and socially important at the Regional level.
Architecturally, the design, based on overlapping circles and curves at different levels, is a unique and fascinating geometric composition combining buildings and landscaping in an organic whole. The circular restaurant is the focal point of the design, with circular platforms, and the curved carparking areas to the west providing uninterrupted views of Melbourne from the summit of Mt Dandenong. The simple geometry of the circles and curves is tempered by the restrained 'organic' elements of the design, such as the rubble rock retaining walls and expressed post-and-beam timber structure of the restaurant.
Socially, the summit, known as the Mt Dandenong Observatory, is important as a popular tourist destination with a long history. The Sky-High restaurant itself had a brief period as a well known dining spot in the 1970s, and the platforms and carparks remain a popular venue for sightseeing.
