Lock Up: The log lock-up was erected c.1870 and was originally located within the police station precinct. It is constructed of rough hewn logs, each approximately 30cm diameter, stacked 10 high and crossed at the corners. The roof was originally clad in timber shingles. The lock-up was used for the temporary accommodation of wrong-doers and prisoners awaiting trial.
There are several nineteenth century lock-ups in Victoria. Of the surviving examples, those constructed of rough hewn logs are among the most notable, giving modern day Australians an insignt into primative construction techniques and the accommodation of wrong-doers. The log lock-up at Bright is a good example of this building type. Its heavy door with robust locking device is a notable feature. The building is well situated beside the Court House and Police Station and is an essential feature of this picturesque historic town.
The building has been moved from its original site.
