Statement of Significance

St. John's Church is a four bay, bluestone church with spire capped tower, built in 1874-5, possibly to the designs of H S Saville. Walls are constructed in random-coursed bluestone with lighter coloured stone dressings and a slate roof. The centrally located tower has a large quatre-foil oculus and angled buttresses with a reduced belfry and diminutive broach spire. Lancet windows are used.
The church is an Early English Gothic Revival design important within the townscape of Streatham, has historical associations and is architecturally important for its detailing. The large quatrefoil window , belfry and diminutive spireare unusual and distinctive details, particularly evocative of vernicular design tradition. The design of the gallery inside, internal hood mouldings with bosses and the roof trusses characterise the original design.
The church was rebuilt following the 1977 bush fires, with an unsympathetic modern addition to the rear, which is excluded.
