Statement of Significance
City Oval Grandstand was constructed for the City of Ballaarat in 1898 to the design of local architects Clegg, Kell and Miller. The building has an arched roof supported by iron columns with elegant cast iron brackets. Crowning the roof are three squat lanterns with concave roofs supporting flagpoles. The front of the grandstand has cast iron balustrading in a sunflower pattern and the upper tired seating section covers dressing rooms and internal stairways.
It is significant as a large and intact grandstand dating from the late nineteenth century. The design, especially of the roof, is unique in Victoria and the setting is enhanced by the ancillary ticket boxes and nearby mature trees.
Classified: 11/06/1981
File Note. The Grandstand is still in the ownership of the City of Ballarat and is basically intact.
