Statement of Significance
Woorookoobanya (Big Water Hole). The main building was started about 1876 and finished about 1884. The plans for the main building included a servants' wing but this was not completed. The property was originally part of Rodborough Vale run taken up by Thos. Chirnside in 1839, followed by Don. McKinnon and finally E G Bucknall & Sons in 1844.
The homestead was built by Albert, the youngest son of E G Bucknall, when he married in 1875. It was sold to a Mr Thompson in 1895 and again about 1900 when it was purchased by Mr David Buick, and was still owned by the Buick family 70 years later.
Stone for the house was quarried about one mile away. Originally it had a tower lookout, reputedly built for fire spotting, but this had to be removed for safety reasons when the house was renovated in the early 1950s. There are 13 main rooms, and overall size is about 66 squares.
