Statement of Significance
The old Timboon Inn, strategically located on the original Geelong-Belfast Road, was erected in 1853-55 for Martin Priest and then sold to resident innkeeper Samuel Cozens. The colonial georgian style inn ceased operations in 1859 following eclipse by hotels newly established in the nearby township of Camperdown. The substantial part two storey bluestone structue replaced a primitive wayside inn of 1841.
The old Timboon Inn stands on a site used as a wayside inn since 1841 and is one of the oldest and certainly most intact of the many bluestone inns erected throughout the western district in the first years of settlement. The notable Georgian colonial style building remains, together with the nearby McNicol homestead Craigburn as the only tangible link with a once developed, but now defunct historic early settlement known as Old Timboon.
The old Timboon Inn, known as Timboon House, has been occupied as a private residence since c.1866. The original balcony verandah has been removed and minor alterations effected internally. The Inn building remains well preserved and remarkably intact. (AHC Citation)
