Statement of Significance

Construction of the former flour mill on the Glenlyon Road, near Daylesford , was commenced in 1862 as a general produce store for J Nairn. District flour miller Throssel purchased the half completed structure and converted the building to a two storey brick flour mill, opening for business in 1863. The rectangular plan building is a utilitarian design without adornment.
The former Throssel's Flour Mill near Daylesford is a utilitarian structure typical of industrial buildings of the mid nineteenth century in Victoria. The building is one of a large group of flour mills constructed throughout Victoria in the early 1860's to service the burgeoning wheat growing industry. The mills at Kyneton and Castlemaine as well as others throughout the state eclipse this building for architectural importance.
The old flour mill near Daylesford is now converted to a residence and is preserved in a relatively unaltered external condition. the interior has been completely rearranged and the mill equipment dismantled. The fabric is in a depressed condition.
