Statement of Significance
Charles Schwengel established the first Victoria Hotel in 1866 and moved to Argyle (Main) Street in 1868. The age of the present building is uncertain but the facade probably dates from the 1880s. The present hotel comprises a two storey brick structure and stretches back in a series of wings providing guest and service rooms. There is also a large stable block. The rendered street facade has a two storey cast iron verandah and an elaborate parapet.
This is a particularly large and intact example of provincial Australian hotel architecture. The building's design is typical of nineteenth century hotels and all of the principal elements of this design remain intact. The right-of-way leading to the stables and the fine quality design and decoration are notable elements of the facade. The Victoria Hotel survives from early times and the present structure is an essential element of this notable historic country town.
There have been no significant external alterations to the building and it is in a sound condition.
