Statement of Significance
Burn Brae was constructed on the crest of a rise in 1912 by W Young for William Bond. In form it is a typical Victorian house with perimeter verandahs, hipped roof and pressed metal ceilings. However it is notable for having its walls and partitions lined both inside and out with pressed metal sheets of various ornate patterns. Those on the outside simulate rusticated ashlar.
Pressed metal linings were first manufactured in Australian in 1890 by Wunderlich Paint and Metal Ceilings Pty Ltd., following earlier popularity in America. They were commonly used for ceiling linings and some times as wall linings internally. Surviving examples of the material being used as an exterior wall cladding are rare.
Burn Brae exhibits a comprehensive use of pressed metal as a lining material both internally and externally and is in excellent condition.
