Statement of Significance
Built 1907, for Anastasia Banks, the Exchange is a rare example of a large timber hotel, still with its original function. The single storey facade presents three gables, two of which span the timber verandah, with its bowed brackets marrying the curb-side posts to the frieze.
The dominant element is the squat hexagonal tower above the public bar, introducing the run of verandah, and capped with the crowning seal of an ogee roof. The three windows of the tower, of which the central is a bay window, echo the three gables.
The pressed metal ceilings and dado of the main public rooms, and the fretted archway linking these, are notable features. The enclosed courtyard, with its palms and central well, no longer exists.
For long the leading hotel of Foster, and now its only one, the Exchange features strongly in the social history of the town, as in its streetscape. Weatherboards now mask the original door of the public bar, chimneys have been removed and the interior has been changed.
