Statement of Significance
The former Royal Bank Building, built in 1908 to the designs of Bendigo architects W Beebe and G Garvin, is of architectural significance at the State level.
It is of considerable architectural and aesthetic merit as a particularly lively free interpretation of the Edwardian Romanesque applied to a large commercial building. Notable features include the large ground level arch, supporting a pair of tall arched openings above, the open circular balustrading at the crown, and the use of circular and bow wnidows and foliated decoration which together create a composition with remarkable playfulness. The art nouveau patterned leadlight at the ground floor and the wrought iron fence are also notable, as is the elaborate plasterwork and joinery of the interior.
