Historical Value: World War I
This fine tree is one of only four known mature examples of the species known in Victoria. Acorns were brought back from Gallipoli by Captain William L Winter-Cooke and presented to the school by the Hon. Samuel Winter-Cooke. Three trees were originally planted on 4 August 1916 but now only one survives. A young tree, descended from those,wasplantedat Geelong Grammar School as part of the ANZAC Commemoration in 1991.A young tree raised from the specimen at Geelong Grammar was planted c.1986 in the Royal Botanic Gardens near the Temple of the Winds (but subsequently died). Another specimen at the Shrine of Remembrance commemorates theAE2 Submarine. The largest specimen in Victoria survives at 'Murndal', the Winter-Cooke property near Hamilton.
