KINNEARS ROPEWORKS - GEELONG - History
MICHAEL DONAGHY ESTABLISHED A ROPEWORKS IN 1852 AT IRISHTOWN, CHIDWELL. THE FACTORY COMPRISED A ROPEWALK, SEVERAL HUNDRED FEET IN LENGTH. THE BUSINESS WAS VERY SUCCESSFUL AND IN 1873 HE BOUGHT LAND AT GEELONG WEST FACING PAKINGTON STREET AND BUILT UP A NEW AND BIGGER ROPEWORKS - NAMED OLE FAIRVIEW ROPEWORKS. A LONG SHED FOR A ROPE WALK WAS CONSTRUCTED IN 1900. SOME REDEVELOPMENT TOOK PLACE IN THE MID-20TH CENTURY. GEORGE KINNEAR AND SONS PURCHASED THE SITE IN THE 1970S.KINNEARS ROPEWORKS - GEELONG - Interpretation of Site
Industrial complex important to the development and prosperity of Geelong. Some unique elements already recognised for cultural, historical significance. Archaeological potential for footings and deposits in vacant areas from the ropeworks period and possibly earlier. Also potential for under-floor deposits below ropewalk and canteen.
Heritage Inventory Description
KINNEARS ROPEWORKS - GEELONG - Heritage Inventory Description
Ropeworks factory spead over 200 x 140 metres. Older buildings date from the late 19th - early 20th Century. A significant feature is the ropewalk - approx 6metres wide x 412metres long. This is a timber framed, corrugated iron structure with a series of rails along which machinery travelled. The original machinery still in place.
Heritage Inventory Significance: State
Standing structures: ropewalk, canteen, substation & warehouse. Bluestone footing along boundary with Pakington Street. Vacant land where building once stood (archaeological potential).
