VOLUM BREWERY MALTHOUSE - History
Heritage Inventory History of Site: The Cummings' brewery was first established in 1845 by John Cummings. The malthouse, a four level bluestone building, was built by Charles Liang in 1851. In 1857 James Volum & Co bought the brewery, which remained in the family until 1958 when it was taken over by Carlton United Brewers. The malthouse was originally a four level building which was converted into a single storey in the 1960s. Floors were removed and the walls lowered, windows and the two main doors were bricked in. The cellar was filled in and concreted over. The east wall was removed, a roller door installed in the rear wall and a new roof constructed.
VOLUM BREWERY MALTHOUSE - Interpretation of Site
Heritage Inventory Interpretation: The contents of the cellar, prior to the changes and what was thrown in during the renovations, may have survived and possibly provide information concerning early brewing practices.

Street facade and parts of the side wall remain. They are propped up by timber supports. It is reported that when the walls were demolished the bluestone was thrown into the cellar
Heritage Inventory Significance: The Volum Brewery Malthouse is one of the oldest buildings in Geelong. It is a unique surviving example of a pre-gold rush Malthouse and one of a few surviving pre-gold rush industrial buildings in Victoria. Archaeological information concerning early brewing practices may be recoverable.
