DEBORAH EXTENDED MINE - History
The following history is taken from Bendigo’s Gold Mining Revival, 1929-1954, James Lerk, 1997 — In August, 1940 work commenced on the shaft - a new collar was put on the shaft, ladders fitted, and by September work was proceeding underground. The plant of the White Horse Mine, Chewton was purchased, dismantled and re-erected near the shaft. It consisted winding machinery, poppet heads, some buildings, boiler and chimney stack. By the end of January 141 work was in full swing at shaft sinking. In April 1942, a payable reef was hit at 85.3 metre level. Operations of the mine then ceased to meet the wishes of the Commonwealth Government to release man power for the war purposes. The mine was re-opened in 1946, repairs were done to the mine buildings and the machinery overhauled. Water baling commenced and the shaft was de-watered to a depth of 188 metres. Development occurred at the 85 metre level but the results from crushing were poor. In 1947 work at the mine was suspended. The empty buildings provided homes for families for a number of years before the assets of the Company were sold by auction. 266 tonnes of ore was crushed for 559.8 grams of gold.DEBORAH EXTENDED MINE - Interpretation of Site
