CSIRO SOUTH H1 - HOMESTEAD SITE - History
Heritage Inventory History of Site: The recorded site appears to be the remains of the homestead known as Maribyrnong House (or Fishers House or Raleigh's House). A parish plan from 1909 shows the remains of the site/ie the homestead ruins, that accord with the location and dimensions of the recorded site. Maribyrnong House was built approx c 1852 by Joseph Raleigh. The property was later owned by C.B & H Fisher (well known horse breeder & racing identity of Melbourne) The house was in ruins by 1892.
CSIRO SOUTH H1 - HOMESTEAD SITE - Interpretation of Site
Heritage Inventory Interpretation: Appears to be the remains of the homestead 'Maribyrnong House' c 1852-1892. the recorded footings are most probably the remains of the end of the northwest wing of the homestead. The bulk of the remains of the homestead would have been situated in the land owned by the commonwealth in the west. (Fence divides development from this land). Bluestone (worked) was noted in a retaining wall on the ex-CSIRO Experiment Station and in the garden of a recently abandoned house to the S/E of the site. These could possibly have been removed from the original house.
