MICKLEHAM ROAD HOMESTEAD COMPLEX SITE - History
The site is located within the boundary of the original Broadmeadows village, plans for which were announced in the Port Phillip Government Gazettes from early 1850. The township grew quickly from this time and thrived on its position en route to the goldfields. Within the first ten years of its existence Broadmeadows village had three hotels, two churches, two schools, a police station, several shops, a variety of trades were in operation. By 1871, census data records a population of 517. Despite this the village began to decline during the 1870s. It is now known as Old Broadmeadows village and is located within present day Westmeadows.
MICKLEHAM ROAD HOMESTEAD COMPLEX SITE - Interpretation of Site
The site comprises a scatter of artefacts eroding out of the creek bank beneath a group of peppercorn trees. This probably represents a dump of late 19th to early 20th century domestic refuse relating to the village of Broadmeadows.
The site has since been subject to disturbance, including the excavation of three pits probably excavated by bottle hunters.
A large number of small ceramic fragments are currently visible at the site.MICKLEHAM ROAD HOMESTEAD COMPLEX SITE - Archaeological Significance
The lack of any obvious structural remains in the vicinity of the site suggests that any such remains may have been destroyed by the construction of the current dual carriageway Mickleham Road (see H7822-0309). Comparison of the current site with the earlier site card and the presence of robber pits suggest that a volume of material has probably since been removed from the site. However, artefacts remain, and it is likely that the site still contains sub surface deposits which may provide information concerning domestic life in this area in the 19th and early 20th century.
MICKLEHAM ROAD HOMESTEAD COMPLEX SITE - Historical Significance
The site is of significance because of its probable relationship to the early settlement of Broadmeadows.
