CHURCH OF CHRIST - History

CHURCH OF CHRIST - Heritage Inventory Description
Previous church on site, John Knox Church, 1847.Present church on site built 1863.1905 map shows church and single storey gymnasium.
Heritage Inventory Significance: THE CHURCH OF CHRIST, 333 SWANSTON STREET, IS CONSTRUCTED OF RENDERED BRICKWORK ON A BLUESTONE BASE AND DATES FROM 1863. THE ARCHITECT WAS C WEBB AND THE CONTRACTOR P CUNNINGHAM. IT WAS ORIGINALLY KNOWN AS THE JOHN KNOX FREE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH AND IN DESIGN REFLECTS A CHURCH OF THE SAME NAME ERECTED ON THE SITE 1847-48 BY C LAING. THIS EARLIER STRUCTURE WAS DEMOLISHED IN 1863; HOWEVER SOME OF THE OLD BRICKS WERE USED IN THE REBUILDING. A CHURCH HAS OCCUPIED THIS SITE SINCE 1847. THE PRESENT BUILDING HAS ASSOCIATIONS WITH THE EARLY HISTORY OF THE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH IN VICTORIA AND PARTICULARLY WITH THE REVEREND JAMES FORBES. ITS ARCHITECT, CHARLES WEBB, WAS VERY IMPORTANT IN NINETEENTH CENTURY MELBOURNE; HIS WORKS INCLUDE SEVERAL CHURCHES OF WHICH THIS IS A NOTABLE EXAMPLE. THE FORM AND COMPOSITION ARE TYPICAL OF THE GOTHIC REVIVAL IN VICTORIA. THE ARCADING AND MOULDINGS AROUND THE FRONT DOOR AND THE TRACERY TO THE WEST WINDOW ARE INTERESTING FEATURES. THE EXTERIOR IS INTACT EXCEPT FOR THE REMOVAL OF THE BELL (NOW AT THE ANGLICAN CHURCH IN (NAR-NAR-GOON), AND THE CAST IRON PALISADE AND LAMP STANDARDS TO SWANSTON STREET. MINOR ALTERATIONS HAVE BEEN MADE TO THE INTERIOR; THE ORIGINAL FITTINGS REMAIN. OF STATE SIGNIFICANCE.
