Statement of Significance
This place is included on the Victorian Heritage Inventory, for its potential to contain historical archaeological remains associated with the settlement and growth of early Melbourne. Under the terms of the Heritage Act 2017 there is protection for all historical archaeology sites and objects in the state.

PORTLAND HOUSE - Heritage Inventory Description
Plans and rate books show a building on site in the 1850s. The current building was constructed in 1872 as town house and surgery, by Henry 'Money' Miller for his daughter, Jane and son-in-law Dr Aubrey Bowen, as a townhouse and surgery. n 1888, the site comprised a 3-storey building with a 2-storey at rear, 2-storey stables, and yard.The shopfronts incorporated into the ground floor are later additions.
