Statement of Significance
This place is included on the Victorian Heritage Inventory, for its potential to contain historical archaeological remains associated with the settlement and growth of early Melbourne. Under the terms of the Heritage Act 2017 there is protection for all historical archaeology sites and objects in the state.

THE MELBOURNE CLUB - Heritage Inventory Description
Fifth land sale 1839, part of three Allotments: 2, 3, 4. Lanes and subdivisions shown by 1839. The Melbourne Club itself was established in 1838. 1850 - building on site. Club building, three storeys and basement, built 1858. 1888 - The Melbourne Club; buildings to Collins St; to Little Collins Street and Ridgeway Place. 1905 - six buildings, The Melbourne Club.
Heritage Inventory Significance: REGISTER OF THE NATIONAL ESTATE - CITATION: A THREE-STOREY BRICK AND STUCCO STRUCTURE WITH BASEMENT (1858-9), ERECTED BY MESSRS LINACRE TO DESIGNS BY LEONARD TERRY. THE MAIN DINING ROOM WING WITH CANTED BAY TO THE STREET (1883); ARCHITECTS, TERRY & OAKDEN) IS THE MOST NOTABLE OF LATER ADDITIONS AND ALTERATIONS EPITOMIZING THE CLASSICAL STYLE OF LEONARD TERRY, THE BUILDING'S FEATURES INCLUDE A VERANDAH, INTERNAL STAIRCASE AND A FINE REAR GARDEN EASTABLISHED IN 1838 THE MELBOURNE CLUB IS VICTORIA'S OLDEST INSTITUTION.
