LANGWARRIN FLORA AND FAUNA RESERVE - MILITARY SITE - History
Heritage Inventory History of Site: Approximately 233 hectares of land was purchased in the 1880s for use by the military, and was transferred to the Commonwealth in 1901. The land was used for manoeuvres during the 1880s, and although there was apparently little building at this time there were some wells dug. Buildings had been erected by 1901, although there is little documentation, and the rifle range was reconstructed in 1912. German prisoners of was were detained there in 1914, in tents initially, and then in huts built in 1915. From August 1915 venereal disease patients were also housed here and the camp was redesigned. The Victorian Government decided against resuming the area and, at the end of 1920, the Ministry of Defence sold all except two buildings. The Reserve was apparently little used by the Army during WW II. From 1974 the site was used by the Army Reserve, school cadets and Balcombe Army Apprentices' School.Source:Calder, W., "Langwarrin Military Reserve", Reports prepared for the Victorian National Parks Service. 1975 & 1982.CFL, "Proposed Management Plan", VGP, Melbourne, 1986.Heritage Inventory Description
