    Heritage Inventory History of Site: The site was used as a native Police Headquarters and an Aboriginal Protectorate Station from 1837 to 1853. The site's early history is described by Marie Fels in "The Dandenong Police Paddocks", (CFL, 1986) and "Good Men and True" (Melbourne University Press, 1988). The site was subsequently used as the Victoria Police Stud Depot from 1853 to 1931. Since then it has been used as a public purposes reserve for, among other things, grazing, a military camp and for scouting.

    Heritage Inventory Description

    DANDENONG POLICE PADDOCKS - Heritage Inventory Description

    Site of the first Native Police Headquarters (1839), Westernport Aboriginal Protectorate Station (1840-42) and the third Native Police Headquarters (1843-1853). Also functioned as the Police Stud Depot until 1931 and farm until c.1959. Physical remains comprise 27 archaeological features associated with different phases of the sites occupation. Remains of at least 4 and possibly up to 6 buildings are located along the spine of a ridge on which the Native Police Headquarters was located. At least one of these buildings (feature 13) is likely to date from the third Native Police Headquarters - others are more recent. Other features comprise recent dumps relating to farming activities.

    Heritage Inventory Significance: The site is of high scientific significance and of high significance to the Wurundjeri (see Rhodes 1989 for assessment of significance).
