Statement of Significance
REVISED STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE, UPDATED WHEN THE CENOTAPH WAS MOVED IN 2012 AS PART OF AMENDEMENT C84 TO THE NILLUMBIK PLANNING SCHEME
What is significant?
The Eltham War Memorial comprising the granite obelisk, plinth and bollards located at 903-907 Main Road, Eltham.
How is it significant?
The Eltham War Memorial is of historical, aesthetic and social significance to the Shirt of Nillumbik.
Why is it significant?
The Eltham War Memorial is historically significant for its role in civic commemoration in the township of Eltham. The Eltham War Memorial was erected on a prominent site on the corner of Main Road and Bridge Street in 1919 and has been relocated twice since its original unveiling. The monument contains the names of the 27 local men who died in the First World War and following the Second World Warthe names of the eleven local men who died in that war were added. The Memorial, including the granite bollards is historically significant for demonstrating the type of monumental memorialisation that occurred in townships following the end of the First World War. (Criterion A)
The Eltham War Memorial is aesthetically significant as an intact representative example of a First World War Memorial. Typical features demonstrating the post First World War period in which is was errected include the use of granite, the obelisk form on a plinth, lead lettering inscription and low granite bollards connected by a chain. (Criterion D)
The Eltham War Memorial is of social significance as a community focus for the commemoration of war in the Eltham district since the end of the First World War. The Momeorial has special associations with the local RSL group. (Criterion G)
REVISED STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE, CONTEXT, 2010
What is significant?
The World War I and II memorial (that was constructed after World War I) and the surrounding site to a radius of 15 metres. The memorial was moved to the site in the 1960s from its original location on the corner of Main Road and Bridge Street.
How is it significant?
The memorial is historically, socially and aesthetically significant to the Shire of Nillumbik
Why is it significant?
The memorial is aesthetically significant as a prominent streetscape feature (Criterion E). Historically and socially because it is the memorial to Eltham's World War I and World War II dead and because it provides a link for present generations to the area's military past (Criteria A & G). The memorial is historically significant because its move, in the 1960s, reflected the growth of Eltham (Criterion A).
BICK STUDY, 1992
This granite memorial to Eltham's First and Second World War dead, has historical importance and is an important element in the streetscape, which also contains the former C.B.A. Bank and the Uniting (former Methodist) Church. The War Memorial was first erected on the corner of Main Road and Bridge Street and had a very different setting, reflecting the country village nature of Eltham then.
