NEW ADA MILL - History
Heritage Inventory History of Site: The New Ada mill was built in 1931-32 as part of the expansion by the Victoria Hardwood Co. A tramway was built north of the Ada No. 2 mill for about 2.5 kilometres, with a short winch hauled incline at the southern end. It appears to have escaped the 1930 fires and closed in 1942, following a short period of salvage work.Heritage Inventory Description
NEW ADA MILL - Heritage Inventory Description
The mill is located on a spur between the branches of the Ada and Little Ada Rivers. Most of the structure has survived with the wall and roof beams collapsed across the foundations. The machinery has been removed. The beams of the mill and the very large tree stumps in the area show no signs of burning, which seems to indicate that the mill escaped the 1939 and 1983 fires. Rails and cables remain on the tramway, about 50 metres south west of the mill. The remains of ten weatherboard buildings are found nearby, the one building still standing showing signs of repair and reconstruction.
Heritage Inventory Significance: State. The preservation of the mill is exceptional, as is its fortunate fire history. A well preserved example of a typical steam powered sawmill, of the type that operated in Victoria's premier logging area in the early 20th century.
