RUSSELL'S MILL, GEMBROOK - History
Heritage Inventory History of Site: Mill established in 1972 by EAC 'Bill' Russell (born 1891 New Zealand), near the junction of Russell and Black Snake Creeks, after the establishment of a steel-railed tramline into the area to transport timber to the railhead at Gembrook. The mill was closed in 1943 due to the wartime shortage of manpower.
RUSSELL'S MILL, GEMBROOK - Interpretation of Site
Heritage Inventory Interpretation: Sawmill established to exploit timber in the Black Snake Creek area, east of Gembrook. The timber tramway has since been converted to Ash Landing Road. About 350 m north of the mill arc the remains of a large pig-sty bridge, where the road was diverted from the tramway formation in a gully.

RUSSELL'S MILL, GEMBROOK - Heritage Inventory Description
Overgrown sawmill site located between Russell Creek and Ash Landing Road, in Bunyip State Forest. The site is one of several mills operated by Bill Russell in the district in the 1920s and 1930s.
Heritage Inventory Significance: The mill belonged to the most important sawmilling company in the Black Snake Creek. The mill was the main terminus of a tramway which was one of only five in Victoria to use articulated steampower.
Heritage Inventory Site Features: Sawmill site lies between Ash Landing Road and Russell Creek. Remains include sawdust heap, sawdust trench, saw frame timbers, mill shed timber uprights and collapsed dugout.
