MORWELL BRIDGE 3 - SUB SURFACE DEPOSIT - History
Heritage Inventory History of Site: Further historical research of the site is required. An issue of the Morwell Historical Society News claims that Thomas Thompson Gov Surveyor, drew up the plan for a small township at Morwell River on the east bank, south of Old Melbourne Rd in 1861 (1962:4). A c1890s parish plan also shows a small settled area here. The site is probably associated with this township.
MORWELL BRIDGE 3 - SUB SURFACE DEPOSIT - Interpretation of Site
Heritage Inventory Interpretation: Sub-surface remains may be part of the Morwell Bridge settlement and associated with structures from within the Smith family land boundaries (parish plan c 1890s). A row of mature poplars lies 26 m to the south of the deposit, which suggests that the area may have originally featured a house.
Heritage Inventory Description
MORWELL BRIDGE 3 - SUB SURFACE DEPOSIT - Heritage Inventory Description
Sub-surface remains of household refuse located during excavation of a 50 m (long) x 0.6 m (wide) x 0.5 m (deep) trench. Trenching was completed as part of a testing program for Aboriginal archaeological material.
Heritage Inventory Significance: Accorded a low scientific significance rating as although found in a sub-surface context, the site appears disturbed and dispersed. May form part of the Morwell Bridge settlement.
Heritage Inventory Site Features: Sub-surface remains were scattered throughout the excavated sediment to an approx depth of 20-30 cm. Remains did not appear to have come from a pit or dump with clearly defined boundaries. Site is composed only of sub-surface materials; These include bottle glass, a kerosene lamp wick and knob, nose-head nails and various fragments of ceramic. Site located on higher level dry terrace above Morwell River. Five mature poplars lie c 26 m to the east. Behind the poplars amidst native vegetation. is a dense patch of blackberries, suggesting former disturbance.
