    JOHNSON'S REEF WORKINGS - History

    Heritage Inventory History of Site: Gold was first discovered in this area in 1861. Production from quartz mining was more or less continuously sustained from 1861 until 1941, and amounted to 33 000 ounces of gold. The area sustained a sizeable mining population for most of the nineteenth century, as evident from the several settlements in the area. In the earlier years the major focus was along the Never Mind Spur, the mines on Websters Spur producing gold intermittently. Towards the end of the nineteenth century the mines along this spur were organised on a more productive basis.

    JOHNSON'S REEF WORKINGS - Heritage Inventory Description

    Consists of a number of costeans and an air shaft near summit of Johnsons Hill. The workings continue west to a substantial open quarry, possibly an entrance to a collapsed adit or an open stope now filled. Approx. 60m below this is an adit and a large mullock dump
