    VILLAGE OF BUNEEP - History

    Heritage Inventory History of Site:
    Buneep first settled by O'Connor who built an inn on the west bank on the track from Melbourne to goldfields and Sale. Track constructed in 1847 with some type of dwelling there soon after. Township never really took off as road re-routed south in 1860's and a new Bunyip developed further south. A hut that existed at old Buneep remained until fires of 1839. The fate of O'connor's Buneep Hotel is unknown. Track very difficult in the region and was extensively corduroyed. Current owner says that this was evident until the last few years.

    Heritage Inventory Interpretation: Site is the first location of Buneep (Bunyip). Site represents evidence and settlement of the west Gippsland region. Site (road) dates to contemporary with 1850's gold exploration. Hut may have been hotel/

    Site comprises level area of former township location, road cutting and bridge location. Buneep Hotel and /(or the same) stockman's hut with bottle dump./n

    Heritage Inventory Significance:/nthe location of site is of high local significance. Potential archaeological deposits of moderate significance.

    Heritage Inventory Key Components: /nRoad cutting (originally corduroy) on both east and west bank of Bunyip River. Level area that once comprised 11 lots and location of former 1870's stockmen's hut and first hotel./nHeritage Inventory Site Features: /nMost prominent feature is the road/track cutting. A small scatter of ceramics fragments at location of hut. According to owner large undisturbed bottle dump exists near hut.
