LYSTERFIELD BOYS FARM SITE - History
Heritage Inventory History of Site:
First owner was Abraham Strettle - 1868. Original house may date to circa 1870. Orchard established on site together with canning factory (c. 1880). In 1908 property was purchased by Gus Powell and used as a horse stud. Purchased in 1935 by the Church of England Boys Society to establish a Boy's Farm. Original house became manager's house and a dormitory, to house 22 boys, and a new dairy were constructed. In 1944 the State Rivers and Water Commission purchased the land and the structures were subsequently removed. Site is now managed by Parks Victoria.
LYSTERFIELD BOYS FARM SITE - Interpretation of Site
Heritage Inventory Interpretation: House site may date to mid-late 19th century, as do orchard remnants. House was also used as residence during the site's use as a boys farm. Other remains (dormitory, dairy) were part of a boys farm.

LYSTERFIELD BOYS FARM SITE - Heritage Inventory Description
/nHouse site, marked by foundations, cistern and garden remnants. Large dump 30 m to west. Dormitory remains marked by fireplace and other installations and a dump area. Remnants of a dairy marked by large concrete slab and cistern. Traces of former orchard.
Heritage Inventory Significance:/nSite has historical and social significance, both for its use as a boys farm and for its earlier associations with the horse racing industry. High level of historical and archaeological research potential.
