FORMER MONTPELLIER HOTEL RUINS - History
Built in 1843 for John Highett who subdivided the estate in 1850, while retaining the house. The Montpellier Hotel was opened in 1858 by Edwin Hooper as a hotel and picnic grounds. Buildings built in 1926 were damaged by a tornado. The ruins and park were purchased by the Geelong City Council in 1960. So stone ws reused at 35 Reigae Road in Highton.FORMER MONTPELLIER HOTEL RUINS - Archaeological Significance
The Montpellier Hotel ruins are highly significant for the intactness of the above ground in situ gavric, itsassociation iwth other archaeological features in the areaand in the context of the parkland setting. The site has considerable potential for buried deposits relating to the house and former buildings and structures within the surrrounding park.
FORMER MONTPELLIER HOTEL RUINS - Interpretation of Site
In 1843 the site was a private residence and part of a large farming estate. In 1858, it was known as the Montpellier Hotel.

FORMER MONTPELLIER HOTEL RUINS - Heritage Inventory Description
The site consists of sandstone ruins - base wall and foundations- of and 1843 homestead (later converted into a hotel) at the eastern end of Montpellier Park. The exten of the ruins are defined by a prominent ditch and embankments. The parkland includes old pine trees and other exotic trees. Artefact scatter consists of glass and ceramics.
