Statement of Significance
Statement of Significance as recorded under the Queenscliff Heritage Study 2009
Stavely is of local historical and architectural significance to Queensliffe as a representative and broadly intact example of a modest Victorian dwelling built in the township in the early years of its development. It is also of historic interest for its association with prominent people in both Queenscliffe and throughout Victoria including its long association with James Deane, a founder of the Melbourne Steamship company.

Stavely, 1 Henry Street, Queenscliff - Physical Description 1
Extract from the 1982 study
Stavely is a simple M-hip roofed, stuccoed brick house which appears to have been originally built without a verandah(9) but is now appointed with a new verandah and a galvanised iron roof which have been added, as has the picket fence, with some sympathy to the design of the house. It is typical of Queenscliff houses of the 1860-80 period and has no more than local architectural importance, however it does have a long association with James Deane who is a figure of state historic importance as an initiator of the Melbourne Steamship Company.
Stavely, 1 Henry Street, Queenscliff - Physical Description 2
Extract from the 2009 study
Stavely is a modest double-fronted rendered brick mid-Victorian house that has a hipped roof clad in corrugated galvanised steel sheeting and a central door flanked by double-hung sash windows. A verandah (not original)[i] with square timber posts extends across the street facing elevation. The house is set back from Henry Street behind a small front garden; a timber picket fence extends along the street boundary. There is a rendered brick chimney with a Classically-inspired moulding at its top. A plainer chimney is visible towards the rear of the house. This property includes a large garden to the south and east of the residence, including a large tree on the eastern boundaryEndnotes:
