Statement of Significance
Statement of Significance as recorded under the Queenscliff Heritage Study 2009
58 Hesse Street is of local historical and architectural significance as an example of a Victorian shop and residence located in Queenscliff's main commercial street; Hesse Street.
While altered at ground floor level, the building is relatively intact above and makes an important contribution to this part of Hesse Street. It is of interest for the detail of its decoration which is relatively elaborate. The building is of local significance for its association with local butcher, mayor and councillor, Thomas Arkins.

58 Hesse Street, Queenscliff - Physical Description 1
58 Hesse Street is a parapetted and stuccoed building of two levels, which was built from random sandstone rubble, and bricks where chimneys were required. The stucco-work is more decorative than its prototype at 60 Hesse Street, with a dentillated cornice, quoining, a scrolled and stepped parapet and console couplets at each end return of the cornice.
In addition, the residential entrance has been recessed and provided with a cast-iron fringed balcony above, which has similarly patterned balustrade panels to those once posessed by Olinda (qv) opposite.
The shop-windows have been replaced and most of the ground level gutted. The building once possessed a posted verandah which has been replaced since with a cantilever verandah.
58 Hesse Street, Queenscliff - Physical Description 2
Two storey stuccoed brick and limestone shop and dwelling built in the 1880s. Upper facade intact, lower facade twentieth century. More ornamented facade than other similar Queenscliff buildings.

Extract from the 2009 study
58 Hesse Street is situated on the west side of Hesse Street, between Stokes and Hobson streets. It is built from random sandstone rubble and bricks that have been rendered with stucco. The stucco-work is more decorative than its prototype at 60 Hesse Street, with a dentillated cornice, quoining, a scrolled and stepped parapet and console couplets at each end return of the cornice.
The residential entrance has been recessed and provided with a cast-iron fringed balcony above, which has decorative balustrade panels.
The shop-windows have been replaced and most of the ground level gutted. The building's posted verandah was replaced with a cantilever verandah in the mid-twentieth century, however since the earlier study this has been replaced with a sympathetic timber posted verandah.
