Statement of Significance
Statement of Significance as recorded under the Queenscliff Heritage Study 2009
The shop at 43 King Street is of historical significance as a relatively intact shop in Queenscliff. With the houses Sefton, Alikum and Rosenfeld (22-26 King Street, HO121, HO122 and HO38), the residence at 39 King Street (HO40), and the Royal Hotel (HO39), the shop at 43 King Street is part of a group of Victorian buildings at the entrance to the township.

43 King Street, Queenscliff - Physical Description 1
Extract from the 1982 study
43 King Street is of stuccoed brick and a corniced parapet hides the hip roof. Unlike other commercial buildings in Queenscliff, it does not have a trabeated facade. The corner door remains but another door has been placed in the north facade. The original showcase window and its glazing bars are intact on the eastern facade but alterations to the northern windows have occurred. These alterations and the inappropriate signage have robbed this building of much of its architectural character. However it plays a valuable role in the streetscape of King Street, as a corner building, and combined with 39 King Street and the Royal Hotel to represent the mid-Victorian character and provide a building form which is stuccoed and close to the building line.
43 King Street, Queenscliff - Physical Description 2
Statement of Significance as recorded under the Queenscliff Heritage Study 2009
43 King Street is a modest rendered brick single-storey shop located at the south-west corner of King and Stevens streets. The shop has a chamfered corner, which accommodates its entry. A cornice extends along the top of the wall, partially concealing a hipped roof clad in corrugated galvanised steel sheeting. The cornice has Classically-inspired mouldings. The building sits upon a rendered bluestone base and the upper parts of the wall are ruled render. Original doorways on the King Street elevation may survive in an altered form, but window openings are of twentieth century origin. The Stevens Street elevation retains a double-hung sash window. A rendered brick chimney with Classically-inspired moulding at its top is visible above the parapet at its west end.
