CALDER RACEWAY SWAMP - History
The history of the site is difficult to determine from available land records, more intensive research required.
It is likely that the site is associated with the Mt Alexander Road during the gold rush era.
CALDER RACEWAY SWAMP - Interpretation of Site
Previoussite cardsuggests that the site may relate to the contact period owing to the presence of artefacts including some of worked glass. The site continues to exhibit surface finds of worked quartz.
The site may have been associated with gold rush era traffic on the Mt Alexander Road, as indicated by the finds which include pipe stems, willow pattern and white wares and early black glass, including pantil marked bottle glass of likely aroundc.1870. These suggest a fair length of domestic occupation, and the site may have accomodated a hut or other insubstantial structure, small pieces of corruagated metal roofing having been found at the site.
CALDER RACEWAY SWAMP - Archaeological Significance
The visible artefact scatter extends along a strip between the ploughed portions of two fields, and it may be that the site actually extends into these areas but has been disturbed.
A pile of dumped soil at the northern end of the site, which contains artefacts including fragments of bottle glass, testifies to some disturbance having occurred within the site, and the adjacent fields have been ploughed quite recently. There does however remain potential for sub-surface deposits, perhaps relating to structures, to survive in the site area.
CALDER RACEWAY SWAMP - Historical Significance
The site may be of historical significance for association with early contact between European settlers and Aboriginal people or it may be associated with the movement of people during the gold rush era.
