South Melbourne Boer War Memorial Fountain - Veterans Description for Public
The Bank Street Memorial Fountain in South Melbourne, commemorates the South African Boer War. 1905 was the Jubilee Year of the foundation of the city of South Melbourne (then named town of Emerald Hill), and was considered to be a fitting time to unveil the memorial fountain erected in honour of the 140 South Melbourne soldiers who fought in the South African Boer war and the 8 who died - G. A. Eddy, T. P. Mohan, J. A. Smith, R. Topham, C. Glinn, C. Moore, J. B. McCann, J. E. White.
The fountain was designed by the manager of G Dawes' Carlton firm of Monumental Sculptors, GH Hendersen and was erected in the short time of nine and a half weeks. The opening ceremony was performed by the then Governor, Sir Reginald Talbot.
The fountain has a commanding design, set on a basalt podium with a combination of grey and pink granite. The form is temple like, with the fountain set within four granite columns that support a freely designed classical canopy and the fountain itself made outof brass. The memorial is surrounded by a fence of wrought iron posts with chains strung between them.
