HICKMANS CREEK SAWMILL - History
THE SITE HAS AN OBSUCRE HISTORY, WITH TWO CONTENDERS FOR OWNERSHIP. THE FIRST, HENRY MCGIE INSTALLED A STEAM SAWMILL ON HICKMANS CREEK IN 1856. IN 1863, THE MILL WAS SOLD TO FORBES AND LEWIN WHO MOVED IT ELSEWHERE. THE SECOND CONTENDER IS JOHN CLUNAS. HE OPERATED A MILL ON HICKMANS CREEK FROM 1874 TO 1877 AND 1879 TO 1884.HICKMANS CREEK SAWMILL - Interpretation of Site
The site consists of a deep pit 10.7 metres long by 5 metres wide. A bifurcated trench leads from the south-eastern side towards the creek. Two trees more than a metre in diameter are growing in this trench, reinforcing the 19th-century date of the site. A substantial stone and brick foundation would appear to be the remains of a boiler setting.
