Statement of Significance
Outstanding example of a highly capitalised sawmill dating to the early 20th century. A large workforce resulted in a significant mill settlement. Substantial evidence remains of all aspects of milling operation.

GOODWOOD SAWMILL & TRAMWAY - History
THE MILL WAS ESTABLISHED WITH CAPITAL FROM THE KALGOORLIE & BOULDER FIREWOOD COMPANY OF WEST AUSTRALIA IN JULY 1910. IN 1912 THE GOODWOOD TIMBER & TRAMWAY COMPANY WAS FORMED TO MANAGE THE MILL AND ITS TRAMWAY SYSTEMS. THE COMPANY EMPLOYED 145 MEN BY THIS STAGE WHO FORMED A SUBSTANTIAL COMMUNITY OF WORKERS AND FAMILIES. THE MILL WAS CLOSED IN MARCH 1920.
GOODWOOD SAWMILL & TRAMWAY - Interpretation of Site
THE OUTLET TRAMLINE LINKED THE GOODWOOD MILL TO THE RAIL TERMINUS AND HARBOUR AT PORT ALBERT, 32KM TO SOUTH-WEST. THE MILL REMAINS DEMONSTRATE WELL THE SEQUENCE OF OPERATIONS FROM LOG YARD TO SAW BENCHES AND THEN STACKING YARDS. A PIT AND FIREBARS MARK THE LOCATION OS A LOCOMOTIVE WORKSHOP. NUMEROUS CHIMNEY MOUNDS AND SCATTERED DOMESTIC DEBRIS MARK THE MILL SETTLEMENT. TWO LOG TRAMWAYS EXTEND NORTH AND EAST FROM THE MILL, REPRESENTED BY EMBANKMENTS, SIDE CUTTINGS, CULVERTS, SLEEPERS AND TRESTLE BRIDGE AND AT LEAST ONE FOREST CAMP.
