Point Ormond Coastal Fortifications - Veterans Description for Public
The Point Ormond Coastal Fortifications were part of the system of coastal forts established in Port Phillip Bay, beginning in the 1850s. The Jervois-Scratchley reports led to major works in the 1880s, when the system of coastal fortifications included Fort Queenscliff, South Channel Fort, coastal batteries at Williamstown, Port Melbourne and St Kilda (Point Ormond). The fortifications of this period were characterised by the use of earth mounding in front of extensive concrete emplacements, tunnels and magazines.
