Statement of Significance

The Windermere flats, designed by J H E Dorney and erected in 1936, are significant at a State level for their particularly expressive use of the Streamlined Moderne style, which is typical of this designer. While other flats expressed modernist principles more directly, Windermere employs some of the stylistic aspects of modernism to great effect. With its curved corners, and dynamic assortment of contrasting horizontal and vertical elements, especially at the streetfront of the building, it is one of the best examples of this style amongst residential flats.
