St Kilda East Artillery Orderly Room - Physical Description 1
As with all orderly rooms built at this time, the St Kilda buildings are of weatherboard construction with corrugated iron roofs. Porches, gables, window surrounds and the massing of the structure provides the visual interest to what are otherwise large, plain buildings. Unlike the other orderly rooms built in the 1880s, with the exception of Carlton (1888), St Kilda has metal roof trusses allowing a wider roof span and hence hall width. The original side wings are slightly different to eachother, avoiding a monotonous rigid symmetry. The early defence of the colony of Victoria relied on local volunteers and the St Kilda Volunteer Rifle Corps and St Kilda Company of the Royal Victorian Volunteer Artillery Regiment were both established in 1859, a measure of the settled nature of the area. After the Colonial Government took over ownership and management of existing volunteer orderly rooms in 1884 in response to a possible threat from Russia, new halls were constructed to replace those erected by volunteer units. This occurred in St Kilda in 1889; the new orderly room and detached residence built in 1889 replaced the original volunteer orderly room of 1865 which had been designed by Reed and Barnes. Sometime following 1889 the gabled southern wing was added, outbuildings were also built and in 1912 lean to additions were added to the rear of the main hall. In 1934 the Gun Park and Battery Stores building along the Alma Park boundary were completed. The place is part of a group of important churches and other buildings in an urban Conservation Area.
