Boort Soldiers Memorial - Veterans Description for Public
The Boort Soldier's Memorial, located outside the Boort Post Office, is a white marble soldier statue raised on a polished grey granite column with a two-stepped granite base. The soldier stands at ease with his rifle butt at his feet, in the symbolic funereal position. The memorial commemorates theservice of young men of the district in the First World War and Second World War, listing the names of forty fallen and returned soldiers. There are flagpoles on the north east and north west sides of the statue. The south face of the memorial is characterised by a bronze insignia of the Australian Commonwealth Military Forces and reads, "In honour of those who enlisted and in memory of those who have fallen."
The Soldiers' Memorial was unveiled by the Earl of Stradbroke on Armistice Day, November 11th, 1921. It was made by Messrs. H. B. Corben and Sons for a cost of £700. The Boort Progress Association worked hard to ensure the unveiling celebrations, which coincided with the Boort Show, ran smoothly. The statue compares closely with those manufactured by monumental masons Lodge Bros of Melbourne whose series of statues of a soldier at attention, with arms reversed and as a light horseman were used throughout Australia.
